BEGINNINGS
The Lake Erie
Boatanchor group (LEB) is an informal collection of amateur radio
operators with a common love of old radio gear.
The original
participants were: Bill Rieke, K8DBN -- Jim Malone, W8PEV --
Dan Harlan, N8ETQ – Ron Mayer, W8KYD and Bob Reardon, W8EPQ .
Both W8PEV and W8EPQ have since passed away. All were/are from
the west side of Cleveland and very active on AM. They got together
at the insistence of Bob, W8EPQ, who suggested everyone meet for
breakfast. W8KYD made the arrangements.
After breakfast, the five
participants traveled to N8ETQ’s shack to view and enjoy Dan’s
vintage equipment. The picture above was taken in 1994 at that
first meeting! While there, plans were made to invite a few
east side AM’ers and Jeff Covelli, WA8SAJ was the first to join the
group at the next breakfast meeting.
From that point on, the group
started to grow naturally as the word got out. The Lake Erie Boat
Anchors now has an active mailing list of over 100 participants that
is updated every four months.
This group of vintage radio
enthusiasts meets three times per year in the spring, fall and
winter. The group is not a club and has no elected officers. A
number of people contribute their time to maintain the mailing list,
arrange for the meeting places and provide the coffee, donuts and
other sundry items.
There is no charge for attending,
however, there is a donation can if people want to help defray the
expenses of pavilion and building rent, printing, postage, coffee,
etc.
Everyone with an interest in
vintage AM or CW is welcome. However, the meetings are not intended
as purely swap meets, although, at times, considerable trading of
vintage equipment is not unusual. The meetings are primarily for
interaction and good fellowship of vintage radio enthusiasts,
including SWL’s
Those not interested in vintage
radio, and especially profiteers, are not welcome and, in fact, have
been turned away in the past.
